For those of you who don't know, [livejournal.com profile] yuletide is an annual gift exchange featuring thousands (no, seriously, thousands) of small fandoms from books, movies, video games, songs, RPF, and of course television shows. Last year I both requested and wrote Southland, and maybe some of you want to as well! You must sign up for at least four fandoms, and you can request up to four, so you're not guaranteed of either writing or receiving Southland, but perhaps there are other small fandoms you'd be interested in--there are certainly plenty to choose from.

The stories are hosted at AO3, and sign ups are open now, until Friday. You can sign up here, and you can find out more details at the LJ community above, plus the admin account, both of which are available on RSS here at DW ([syndicated profile] yuletide_feed and [syndicated profile] yuletide_admin_feed).

Over on LJ, [livejournal.com profile] misspamela has the initial polls up for the Fandom Hot 20. Lydia Adams, John Cooper, and Ben Sherman have all been nominated, and they need your votes! You can vote for up to 10 characters; the main polls with Southland characters are here and here, with an extra poll including three characters we don't really care about here.

So go vote! Tell everyone about the poll! And tell them to VOTE BEN SHERMAN (sorry, personal bias showing there) VOTE FOR SOUTHLAND CHARACTERS!

Also, I have created [syndicated profile] southlandtv_feed, an RSS feed of [livejournal.com profile] southland_tv, so you can now read that over here on DW.

I don't know about the rest of you, but I was completely blown away by last night's episode and am in no way ready to have that be the last episode of this amazing show. So let's make sure to contact TNT and let them know how we feel!

I'm thinking pretty seriously of setting up some sort of fic challenge for Southland, tentatively called "Summer of Southland," to be hosted on a new DW community, or we could host it on [community profile] southland_news. It might be a Big Bang challenge (with probably a 20,000 word minimum), or we could just have a 1000 word minimum to try to get more stuff written. I'm thinking of rolling the challenge out in the next few weeks/by May 1st, with the deadline sometime in the fall. What do you guys think?

ETA: Okay, I have created [community profile] summerofsouthland for the purpose of a multi-media fest this summer, with details to be determined and announced. A bunch of folks over on LJ have said they're interested in participating (see [livejournal.com profile] southland_tv for comments); I think we can post links to things for people unwilling to come over here to DW.

One of the LJ comms linked to this NY Daily News article about Cudlitz's Twitter campaign to save the show. The article contains a pic that is slightly spoilery for the upcoming new season.

TNT has picked up Southland!

TNT has picked up the critically acclaimed series SOUTHLAND, closing a deal with Warner Bros. Television that will bring the drama from Emmy®-winning producer John Wells (ER, The West Wing) to the network in January. TNT has obtained exclusive rights to air all six episodes that have been shot for the second season, as well as the seven episodes from the series’ first season. SOUTHLAND will air on TNT Tuesdays at 10 p.m. (ET/PT), beginning with the first episode of the series on Jan. 12.

“This is a great win for fans of SOUTHLAND and a perfect opportunity to introduce the series to new viewers,” said Steve Koonin, president of Turner Entertainment Networks. “It’s also another outstanding example of how TNT has established itself as the go-to place for the best dramas on television.”

Eeeeee! Hat-tip to [livejournal.com profile] southland_tv for this info from the NYT:

In another sign of its growing reliance on original programming, TNT is expected to announce Monday that it will begin showing “Southland,” the critically acclaimed but abruptly canceled NBC police drama, starting in January. With the move, “Southland” becomes the rare TV series to be dropped by a broadcaster and revived by a cable outlet, where it will compete at 10 p.m. with NBC’s “The Jay Leno Show.”

TNT was talking to the producer of “Southland,” Warner Brothers, within hours of the cancellation in October. “We want to provide what the broadcast networks aren’t,” Mr. Koonin said.

From a blog at Deadline Hollywood (via [livejournal.com profile] southland_tv), the unofficial news is that TNT is getting ready to pick up Southland.

Quoting the blog:

'Southland' Set For Official Pick Up By TNT
By Nikki Finke

I hear it looks certain for a TNT pickup of Southland, which was dumped by NBC. People working on the show are being told to prepare for a projected November 2nd re-start date. Warner Bros has no official announcement. But that's because TNT and NBC are still negotiating some moolah terms, according to my sources.C'mon, was there really any doubt about this? Especially since John Wells and Barry Meyer are joined at the hip? Plus, judging from the fan furor, the show deserved another try.

At this moment, this is what I understand to be the most accurate info.

From the Hollywood Reporter:

Keep up the faith, "Southland" fans.

John Wells, executive producer of the recently canceled NBC drama, called actors on the show late last week to tell them he is in talks with two networks about the cop series finding a new home.

Wells reportedly didn't identify the networks, but TNT, corporate sibling of show producer Warner Bros. TV, has been interested in acquiring the series and is considered the most likely contender to pick it up.

Even if a deal is to be made to go to another network, there are indications that "Southland," whose production was shut down by NBC this month, won't resume filming anytime soon. The potential buyer would run the seven episodes from the first season and the six produced episodes from the second as a 13-episode freshman cycle.

I really want to figure out what the best strategy might be for sending emails, phone calls, letters, what have you. It seems like NBC is not the best bet, except maybe for pleas to actually air the 6 episodes of season 2. Who would be the right people to contact about a DVD release? What networks should we contact to urge them to pick the show up (HBO? TNT? AMC? F/X?)? What do you guys think?
